What is HALAL Certification?

HALAL Certification does not have a Full Form. In Arabic, the word basically means permissible. Thus, the term HALAL certified means the product is permissible as per the Islamic law. In order to obtain HALAL certification in India, you must prove that your products have been sourced from acceptable sources such as a Cow or chicken that has been butchered in accordance to the HALAL laws.

Who provides HALAL certification in India?

Private bodies provide HALAL certification, meaning that certain independent bodies have been given the task to assess a product and then provide it with the certification in India:

  1. Halal Indian Private Limited
  2. Halal Certification Services India Private Limited
  3. Jamiat Ulama-E-Hind Halal Trust
  4. Jamiat Ulama-E-Maharashtra – a State unit of Jamiat Ulama – E – Hind

These institutes are responsible for overseeing the following aspects of Halal products:

  1. The product must not contain any part of an animal that is prohibited under the Islamic laws. Furthermore, the animals should have been slaughtered as per the Shariah.
  2. The product must not contain anything that is deemed as impure as per the Shariah
  3. The product must not be prepared, manufactured or processed using any instrument that is not free from any impurity stated by the Shariah
  4. Over the course of preparation of the food product, and during storage, the product must not be in close vicinity to anything that can be considered impure by Hukum Shariah;

What are the different types of HALAL certification?

The nature of HALAL certification varies depending upon the nature of your business. In most cases, the certification is issued for hotels, slaughter houses, restaurants, labelling materials etc. However, this is not the extent of this certification. Speaking broadly, one can categorize HALAL certification into the following categories:

  1. Details of your company or other business entity: Provide the details of your company, your sole proprietorship firm, LLP, or society. The details should entail the certificate number.
  2. Copy of the manufacturing or export license: If applicable to your business, provide manufacturing or import license copies
  3. Health certificate license copy: Provide a copy of the health certificate license that you have obtained from your local municipal body.
  4. Procedures for pest control: Provide complete information pertaining to the pest control procedures that you have implemented at your premises.
  5. Flow chart of the product: Complete flow chart of your production.
  6. Specimen of the products with original packing: Sample of the product

What is the HALAL certification process?

The HALAL Certification process in India is as follows:

  1. Application filing: The first step is application filing. Here, the applicant must fill out an offline application form and submit it to the authorities in India.
  2. Application Audit: The HALAL certification body will then assess your application form on various aspects.
  3. Premises inspection: The officials of the certification body will then pay a visit at your premises –after which they will proceed to inspect it.
  4. Certification: Provided that your premises meet all the HALAL certification requirements, you will obtain the final certificate.
